Dry Needling Therapy
Swift'a Dry Needling services are provided by a fellowship-trained Physical Therapist who has advanced training in dry needling techniques. Dry needling is a therapeutic technique used by our physical therapists, to treat neuromuscular pain and dysfunction. Unlike traditional acupuncture, which is based on traditional Chinese medicine principles, dry needling is rooted in Western medicine concepts, specifically neuroanatomy and physiology.
During a dry needling session, a practitioner inserts thin needles into specific trigger points, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and adjacent to painful nerves. The needles are then stimulated with electrical currents that are set to specific parameters depending on the type of pain experienced by the patient.
Dry needling works through several mechanisms. It targets and deactivates trigger points, reducing muscle tension and improving range of motion. Dry needling stimulates the body's natural healing processes by increasing blood flow, stimulating collagen synthesis, and promoting the release of pain-relieving substances such as endorphins and serotonin. Additionally, it may disrupt dysfunctional nerve signals, helping to reset pain pathways in the nervous system.
